FROST DEPTH GAUGE

In cooperation with the National Weather Service (NWS), the Faribault County Soil & Water Conservation District monitors weekly frost depth at an established site in Blue Earth from November through April.  The NWS uses these observations to model the amount of precipitation or snowmelt that runs off into streams due to the soil being frozen and not able to infiltrate moisture.

In addition, the frost depth observations are used by public works officials and contractors to assess the effects of the soil frost on underground pipes and construction operations.
