JUDICIAL DITCH 9 WETLAND RESTORATION PROJECT
The State of Minnesota, through the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), working with the Faribault SWCD, the local drainage authority, and several landowners proposed to restore a series of farmed drained wetland basins along the upper reaches of JD 9.
The State of Minnesota secured five perpetual conservation easements through the state's CREP program to facilitate the restoration of the drained wetland areas on five properties. The condition of the JD 9 system that existed within the easement areas was not providing adequate drainage. The wetland areas were often flooded after runoff events and caused extensive crop damage prior to enrollment into CREP.
The project restored a large wetland complex containing approximately 120 acres of wetland within 173.6 acres of permanent easement area. In addition to being very beneficial from an environmental standpoint, the project will also help to control flooding and benefit all parties involved.
