In 2001 Faribault County applied for and received a Local Water Management Challenge Grant from BWSR to assist three unsewered communities with searching out the most cost effective and feasible way to upgrade their wastewater treatment systems.
Bolton & Menk, Inc. was hired to prepare a Preliminary Engineer Report (PER) for Huntley. This study determined the most efficient method of wastewater treatment would be to regionalize with the neighboring city of Winnebago, which is located five miles northeast and utilizes a mechanical treatment plant. The county worked cooperatively with USDA Rural Development (RD) on financing as well as project support, and as a result was able to secure a combination of loan and grant funds through RD and the Wastewater Infrastructure Fund (WIF).
The completed project consisted of boring a force main line from Huntley to Winnebago, and installing public and private service lines within the community. The county and SWCD also worked one on one with homeowners to complete in-home inspections and identify problems prior to project completion, minimizing Inflow & Infiltration (I/I) issues. This was truly a joint effort and utilized the Huntley Sewer Service District (SSD), Faribault County, City of Winnebago, and Huntley residents to successfully complete this water quality point source pollution project. For their efforts, the community of Huntley was chosen for the 2007 "Outstanding" Conservationist Award.
