SOUTH CENTRAL MINNESOTA REGIONAL ENVIROTHON
What is the ENVIROTHON?
The ENVIROTHON consists of five learning stations, based on the topics of soils, water quality, forestry, wildlife, and a current event issue. Teams of four to five high school students visit the stations where resource professionals use the outdoor environment to ask students approximately 20 "hands on" questions at each station. Students must also give an oral presentation. At the end of the day, the team with the most points wins! Click here to see pictures of the 2008 ENVIROTHON.

The Minnesota ENVIROTHON began in 1993 as a metro-area pilot program. About 100 students participated. In 1994, four of the SWCD area employee associations organized area ENVIROTHONS for their approximately 13 county areas. The top teams from each of those four area competitions then participated in the Minnesota ENVIROTHON. By 1996, ENVIROTHONS were being held throughout the state with over 1,200 students participating. The ENVIROTHON has been growing ever since.
Who Benefits?
STUDENTS: Students get the opportunity to learn about our environment in the most natural way possible...outdoors! In addition, they get to meet students and teachers from other schools who share their interest in learning about protecting our natural resources.
SCHOOLS: Schools get the opportunity to provide students with a unique and lasting experience. The ENVIROTHON also gives schools the chance to recognize and encourage outstanding academic achievement in their students.
THE COMMUNITY: Everyone benefits by having concerned and well informed citizens who can weigh all factors when making decisions that affect the environment.
What can you do?
If you're a teacher or advisor, organize a team! If you're a superintendent, contact a person in your school to organize a team! If you're a student, tell a teacher or advisor you are interested in putting a team together.
